About the VAM
The Hondsrug, a unique geological formation in the northeast of the Netherlands, stretches from the city of Groningen to the German border. This striking sand ridge, formed during the last ice age, is characterized by its elongated hills and valleys, which give the surrounding landscape a unique character.
The Hondsrug is rich in natural beauty and biodiversity. The diversity of dense forests, heathlands, stream valleys, and sand drifts makes it a paradise for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers. This area is home to an abundance of flora and fauna, including rare plant species and typical woodland animals.
Besides its natural beauty, the Hondsrug also holds deep historical and cultural significance. The area is peppered with traces of prehistoric habitation, such as dolmens and ancient burial mounds, which testify to its rich history. The Hondsrug region has been recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, underscoring its unique geological, archaeological, and cultural value.
The Hondsrug offers a fascinating mix of natural wonders and historical riches, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Dutch nature and history.
