Mittens

Ice-cold fingers, even with gloves on? In a mitten your fingers share their warmth, so your hands stay noticeably warmer. Ideal in freezing cold, snow and long outings where your pace drops. If your hands get cold fast, a pair belongs in your vest.

Running mittens: the warmest choice in real cold

In a mitten your fingers sit side by side and warm each other. That keeps your hands a lot warmer than a glove of similar thickness. Exactly what you want in freezing temperatures, strong wind or a long day in the mountains.

When do you choose mittens?

  • Below freezing: when gloves can't keep up.
  • Long or slow outings: hiking, power hiking or ultras where your pace and body heat drop.
  • Hands that get cold fast: always the first with white fingers? A mitten is often the answer.

Fleece, insulated or waterproof?

Fleece is light, breathable and dries fast: ideal for dry cold. Insulated mittens, for example with PrimaLoft, hold in warmth even when slightly damp. Waterproof mittens combine insulation with a membrane for snow and wet cold.

Mitten or overmitt?

A mitten insulates on its own. An overmitt is a thin waterproof shell without insulation that you wear over a glove. Want both in one? Have a look at the 2-in-1 gloves.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use my watch or phone with mittens?
It's harder than with gloves. That's why many runners wear a thin liner underneath, so they can slip the mitten off without exposing bare hands.

Aren't mittens too warm to run in?
Above a few degrees above zero, often yes. Below that, and certainly in wind, they're very comfortable.
