Women's midlayers: warmth that moves with you

Cold at the start, sweaty after the climb, shivering on the descent: without a good second layer, a winter run becomes a constant battle with your body temperature. You wear a midlayer over your base layer and, when it rains or the wind picks up, under your rain jacket. It holds in warmth without letting you overheat. In this collection you'll find women's midlayers from brands including Icebreaker, Ronhill, Salomon and NNormal.

Which type of midlayer suits you?

  • Merino half-zip — warm, temperature-regulating and stays fresh. Ideal for long runs and multi-day adventures.
  • Grid fleece or thermal — lightweight, highly breathable and wicks sweat away fast. Perfect for hard efforts in the cold.
  • Insulated hoodie or jacket — like the Ronhill Tech Winter Primaloft Hoodie or NNormal Active Warm Jacket: extra warmth for cold days, stops along the way and mountain outings.

Adjust on the go

A good midlayer makes it easy to adapt. Open up a half-zip or full-zip on the climb and zip it back up for the descent. Thumbholes keep your sleeves in place and your hands warmer, and a close-fitting hood adds wind protection without getting in the way. No need to stop every few kilometres to adjust your kit.

Midlayer as the mandatory warm layer for trail races

Many ultra trails require a warm second layer in your mandatory kit. For UTMB races, for example, it must weigh at least 180 grams in size M (men's) — a cotton shirt or thin base layer doesn't count. Always check your race rules and the specs on the product page.

Fit: close, but with room to layer

A midlayer fits close so the warmth stays in, but should still leave room for a base layer underneath and slip easily under a rain jacket. Not sure about your size? Come and try it on in our store on the Maasstraat in Amsterdam.

Frequently asked questions

When should I wear a midlayer?

Usually below 10 degrees, and definitely in wind, in the mountains or on early-morning and evening runs. At higher intensity you can often get away with a thinner layer than you'd think.

Can I wear a midlayer as an outer layer?

Yes. On dry, cold days a midlayer is often all you need as your outer layer. In rain or strong wind, pair it with a women's rain jacket.

Merino or fleece?

Merino is warm, regulates your temperature and stays fresh. Fleece dries faster, ventilates better and is often a bit more durable. Long and steady: merino. Short and intense: fleece.

Build your layers smartly

Combine your midlayer with a breathable long sleeve as your base layer, warm tights and gloves. Browse all women's trail running clothing or the complete midlayers collection.
