In our store we have an entire wall full of running backpacks, also called trail vests or racing vests. There are quite a few because a different vest is needed for each purpose. If you run a short distance without poles, you need a different vest than when you run an ultra with poles. What should you actually pay attention to? So before purchasing a backpack, it's important to know what to look for. Here is some advice to help you choose the ideal running backpack.
1. Fit and Comfort
The fit is crucial when choosing a running backpack. A good backpack should feel like a part of your body, without sliding or chafing as you walk. Look for backpacks with adjustable straps so you can adjust them to your body shape, providing stability and comfort while walking. Our brands come from various countries and you can notice that in the fit.
2. Weight and Material
A lightweight backpack reduces the strain on your shoulders and back, which is essential for longer distances. Materials such as ripstop nylon are ideal because they are lightweight yet durable. At Trail.nl we offer backpacks that are specially designed for runners, with materials that are both lightweight and robust.
3. Capacity
The capacity of your backpack depends on your running needs. For short daily runs, a smaller backpack is sufficient in which you can carry basic necessities such as water, keys and a phone. If you are planning longer adventures or trail runs, you will need a backpack with a capacity of 10 liters or more, suitable for extra clothing, nutrition and hydration packs. Our smallest vest is 2 liters and the largest 20 liters. Above that you come to the light hiking backpacks that can even hold up to 40 liters.
4. Hydration options
Good hydration is essential, so it's important that your pack is compatible with hydration systems or has easily accessible water bottle pockets. This ensures that you can easily drink while running without stopping or slowing down your pace. The choice here is mainly whether you want a drinking bag or reservoir of two liters on your back, or two soft flasks of 500 ml per piece on the front. Almost all vests offer both options and include one option as standard. The advantage of soft flasks is that they are easier to fill and that you can take two flavors with you. For example, one with water and one with sports drink.
5. Ventilation
Make sure the backpack you choose has a good ventilation system to prevent overheating and excessive sweating. Mesh panels on the back provide air circulation, which significantly improves your comfort.
6. Extra Features and boxes
Look for additional features like reflective details for safety in the dark, and easy-access pockets for snacks or your smartphone. These features can significantly improve your running experience. It is also useful to know the number of compartments in which you can put things.
7. Clubs or no clubs
Do you run with trail poles? Then it is of course useful that you can attach these to the vest when you are not using them. This does not work with all vests, so pay close attention.
Otherwise, just come and try it on
You actually need to try on a good running vest, just like good shoes. Then you can be sure that you can easily access your belongings and that everything can go with you. We have a wide selection in the store, so you are always welcome to come and try it on.
