About the VAM
The VAM-berg, officially known as the VAM waste site, is a unique location in Drenthe, the Netherlands, offering a unique combination of environmental management and recreation. This artificial hill, originally a landfill managed by the Vuil Afvoer Maatschappij (VAM), has been transformed over the years into an attractive destination for sports and nature enthusiasts.
At an elevation of approximately 48 meters above sea level, the VAM-berg offers a challenging trail for cyclists and hikers. It is especially popular with road cyclists due to its steep slopes, which are rare in the relatively flat Dutch landscape. The summit offers impressive views of the Drenthe landscape, making it an attractive spot for both recreationists and nature lovers.
Besides its recreational function, the VAM mountain is also a symbol of successful landscape restoration and sustainable management. The area surrounding the mountain has been ecologically developed, with attention to local flora and fauna.
