Frequently asked questions about trail vests

How do I choose the right size trail vest?

A trail vest should fit snugly around the body without constricting, so that it does not chafe or bounce while running. Choose your size based on your chest circumference and consult the brand's size chart. Also, consider whether you will be wearing the vest over a thin running shirt or a thicker jacket.

What is the difference between a trail vest and a regular running backpack?

The biggest difference lies in the fit and weight distribution. You wear a trail vest like a piece of clothing; it keeps water bottles and gear close to your center of gravity to prevent bouncing. A running backpack carries the weight more on the back and is suitable for larger amounts of luggage, but fits less snugly on technical terrain.

How much drink can I carry in a trail vest?

Most trail vests have pockets on the chest for two 500 ml soft flasks. In addition, many models have space on the back for a 1.5 to 2 liter hydration bladder. This allows you to easily carry 2 to 3 liters of fluid for long trail runs or ultras.

Can you also attach trail poles or walking sticks to a trail vest?

Yes, most modern trail vests are equipped with special loops or have the option to attach a pole quiver. This allows you to quickly store your trail poles when you are not using them on flat sections.
