The quarter cuff sits just above the ankle. The sock doesn't slip down in your shoe and gravel and sand get less of a chance. You notice it most on loose gravel paths and dusty single track.
Merino wool keeps your feet drier on long runs. The sock fits snugly without wrinkles, so you're less likely to get blisters, even after two hours of running or on long descents.
Choose the 1044 if you want a thin sock you barely notice. Want more comfort under the ball of your foot? Go for a cushioned version.
