Trail shoes for trail running and ultra running

Good trail shoes are the foundation of every trail run. Unlike regular running shoes, trail shoes are specially designed for unpaved terrain such as mud, gravel, rocks, and forest paths. They offer more grip, protection, and stability, so you can walk safely and efficiently.

During trail running, you encounter varying surfaces and conditions. That is why trail shoes are equipped with coarse profile (lugs) for grip and a sturdier construction to protect your feet from stones, roots, and sharp surfaces.

What to look for in trail shoes

When choosing the right trail shoe, there are a few important factors:

Grip (outsole)
Deep studs provide better traction on mud, wet surfaces, and loose stones.

Damping (cushioning)
From minimalist to maximal. More cushioning means more comfort over long distances, less cushioning gives a better feel for the ground.

Stability and protection
Many trail shoes have a reinforced toe and sometimes a rock plate to protect your feet.

Drop and fit
From zero drop (like Altra) to higher drops. This affects your running style and comfort.
