About the Utrecht Hill Ridge
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a beautiful nature reserve in the heart of the Netherlands, is characterized by rolling hills, vast forests, and historic villages. This unique ridge formed during the penultimate ice age, some 150,000 years ago, and stretches from the Gooimeer lake near Huizen to the Grebbeberg near Rhenen.
One of the most striking features of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug is its rich biodiversity. The area is home to a variety of plants and animals, including rare bird species and large game such as roe deer and wild boar. The forests, consisting of beech, oak, and conifers, offer a serene environment for nature lovers and hikers.
Besides its natural beauty, the Utrechtse Heuvelrug also boasts a rich cultural history. Numerous castles and country houses, such as Amerongen Castle and Zeist Castle, bear witness to a glorious past and offer a glimpse into Dutch history. The Utrechtse Heuvelrug is not only a paradise for nature lovers but also a source of inspiration for historians and culture enthusiasts.
