About the Utrechtse Heuvelrug
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a beautiful natural region in the heart of the Netherlands, is an area characterized by its rolling hills, vast forests and historic villages. This unique land ridge was created in the penultimate ice age, about 150,000 years ago, and extends from the Gooimeer near Huizen to the Grebbeberg near Rhenen.
One of the most striking features of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug is its rich biodiversity. The area is home to a variety of plants and animals, including rare bird species and large game such as deer and wild boar. The forests, consisting of beech, oak and coniferous trees, provide a serene environment for nature lovers and hikers.
In addition to natural beauty, the Utrechtse Heuvelrug also has a rich cultural history. Numerous castles and country houses, such as Amerongen Castle and Slot Zeist, bear witness to a glorious past and offer a glimpse into Dutch history. The Utrechtse Heuvelrug is not only a paradise for nature lovers, but also a source of inspiration for historians and culture lovers.
