Why a technical running shirt makes the difference

A cotton shirt soaks up sweat and stays wet, heavy and cold on your skin. A technical running shirt wicks moisture away, dries quickly and keeps your body at the right temperature. On the trail there's more: you often wear a vest or a belt. A good shirt then has flat seams and a fabric that doesn't chafe on your shoulders or lower back, even after hours.

Which shirt suits your run?

Fast and hot: mesh and light race shirts.

Fit: tight, regular or loose?

• Tight (race fit): the shirt sits close to your skin and wicks sweat fastest. Nothing flaps in the wind. Ideal for races and tempo work.
• Regular: a bit more room, but it still sits neatly under a vest. This is the best all-rounder.
• Loose: comfortable for easy runs and everyday wear, but less ideal under a full pack.

Frequently asked questions

Synthetic or merino?
A synthetic shirt dries faster and is often cheaper. Merino smells less and feels more pleasant in changeable weather. For races and heat, many runners choose synthetic; for long tours and multi-day trips, merino.

How do I prevent chafing under my vest?
Choose a shirt with flat seams and no seams on the shoulders, in a size that fits snugly. A loose shirt slides back and forth under the straps, and that causes friction. An anti-chafing stick on sensitive spots also helps.

How do I wash a technical running shirt?
At 30 to 40 degrees, without fabric softener. Fabric softener clogs the pores in the fabric, so the shirt wicks moisture less well. Let it air dry.
