Jackets for trail running and outdoor adventures

Whether you are running through the mountains, taking a forest trail, or going on a long hike: a good jacket is essential. In this collection, you will find softshells, windbreakers, rain jackets, and down jackets designed for intense exertion and rapidly changing weather conditions.

What is this collection?

This collection consists of functional jackets for trail runners and outdoor enthusiasts. Each type of jacket has its own application:

  • Softshells: breathable, slightly water-repellent and ideal for cool, dry weather
  • Windbreakers: ultralight and perfect against cutting wind on open trails
  • Rain jackets (hardshells): completely waterproof and suitable for wet conditions
  • Down jackets/insulation jackets: for warmth during rest periods or cold runs

When do you use which jacket?

The right choice depends on the weather and your effort:

  • Are you going intensive trail running in mild conditions? Choose a windbreaker or lightweight softshell.
  • You expect rain or prolonged wetness? Then a waterproof raincoat is essential.
  • Are you standing still or is it really cold? A down or insulation jacket will keep you warm.
  • In changeable weather, a layer system (e.g. base layer + windbreaker) often the most flexible

What do you look for when choosing a coat?

With trail jackets, it is all about the balance between protection and breathability:

  • Weight & packability: easy to carry in your trail vest or backpack
  • Breathability: prevents overheating during exertion
  • Water resistance (mm) & DWR coating: important in rainy conditions
  • Fit & freedom of movement: snug but comfortable while running
  • Extras: such as hood, ventilation zippers and reflective details

Different types and their benefits

Each jacket has a specific role within your gear:

  • Windbreakers: minimalist, compact to store, and ideal as an emergency layer
  • Softshells: comfortable and versatile in fluctuating temperatures
  • Raincoats: maximum protection against rain and wind
  • Down jackets: ultimate warmth, perfect for breaks or cold conditions

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Do I always need a raincoat while trail running?
Not always. In dry weather, a windbreaker is often sufficient. However, in the mountains or in unpredictable weather, a lightweight rain jacket is highly recommended.

What is the difference between a softshell and a hardshell?
A softshell is more breathable and comfortable, but less waterproof. A hardshell (rain jacket) is completely waterproof, but often slightly less breathable.

Can I use a down jacket while running?
Down jackets are less suitable for intensive running, but ideal for standing still, breaks, or very cold conditions.
