Maintenance Tips for Trail Running Poles: Aluminum and Carbon

Trail running poles are an essential tool for many trail runners, especially during challenging climbs and descents. Whether you use carbon or aluminum poles, proper maintenance is crucial to maintain their performance and longevity. In this blog post, we share helpful maintenance tips for both materials, so you can get the most out of your trail running poles.

Why Is Maintenance Important?

Trail running poles are often exposed to rough conditions: muddy trails, rain, rocky terrain, and dust can affect their lifespan and functionality. Regular maintenance prevents wear and ensures your poles always perform optimally. Whether you have lightweight carbon poles for faster trails or robust aluminum poles for greater durability, proper care and cleaning are essential.

Maintenance of Aluminum Trail Running Polesx

Aluminum poles are sturdy and resistant to harsh conditions, but they still require regular maintenance to prevent them from being damaged by dirt and moisture. Follow these tips to keep your aluminum trail running poles in top condition:

  1. Cleaning after every trip Wipe your poles with a dry or slightly damp cloth after each trail. Make sure to remove all dirt and dust, especially around the locking mechanisms.

  2. Prevent rust Aluminum can corrode if not cared for properly. Let your poles dry completely before storing them, especially if they've gotten wet from rain or mud. Store them in a dry place to prevent moisture buildup.

  3. Regular check of parts : Regularly check the caps, grips, and locks. Aluminum poles often have twist locks or clips that can wear out over time. Replace worn parts immediately to prevent problems on your next trail run.

Maintenance of Carbon Trail Running Poles

Carbon poles are lighter and stiffer than aluminum poles, making them ideal for longer distances and technical terrain. However, carbon is also more susceptible to breakage. Therefore, careful maintenance is important to prevent damage:

  1. Clean carefully Carbon fiber can crack easily if handled improperly. Gently wipe away any dirt with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive materials that could damage the carbon fiber. Do not use harsh cleaning agents.

  2. Store in a dry place : Like aluminum poles, carbon poles should be stored dry. If your carbon poles get wet, let them dry unpacked to prevent moisture buildup in the segments.

  3. Avoid extreme pressure : Carbon is strong, but not resistant to hard impact.Do not place heavy objects on your poles or bend them excessively, as this increases the risk of cracking or breaking.

Extra Tips for Telescopic and Folding Poles

Trail running poles are often telescopic or collapsible, meaning they have segments that can be extended or folded. Here are some additional maintenance tips for these models:

  • Let them dry after use : Pull the segments apart and let them dry thoroughly. This prevents dirt or moisture from accumulating in the tubes, which could affect the stick's function.
  • Avoid lubricants : Do not use oil or grease to soften the rods, as this can attract dust and dirt and clog the locking mechanism. If the rods feel stiff, simply wipe them clean with a dry cloth.
  • Regular inspection : Regularly check that the segments slide in and out smoothly and that all locks function properly. Minor problems such as stiffness or squeaking can often be easily resolved by thoroughly cleaning the poles.
