This shoe walks like a trail shoe and protects like a hiking shoe. The cushioning feels protective but not clunky, and there is enough spring left during push-off to jog for a while. The padded collar fits snugly around the ankle and keeps stones and grit out. It feels sturdier than a regular Speedgoat, but doesn't become stiff anywhere.

It is made for long days on varied terrain. Think of multi-day trips in the Ardennes, the Eifel, or the Alps, with wet grassy paths, mud, and rocky sections. The reinforced upper can withstand abrasion against rocks and branches, and the sole grips well on wet stone and loose ground. You will notice the difference especially at the end of a long day with a backpack: your feet are still dry and your legs feel less sore on the final descents.

Choose this shoe if dry feet are more important than ventilation. The waterproof membrane breathes less than open mesh, so your feet will get warm in warm weather or during fast training sessions. If you mainly run races or summer trail runs, the regular Speedgoat 7 suits you better. If you want a lot of ankle support for rough terrain with a backpack, choose a high hiking boot.
