About the VAM
The VAM-berg, officially known as the VAM waste site, is a unique location in Drenthe, the Netherlands, and offers a special combination of environmental management and recreation. This artificial hill, originally a landfill managed by the Vuil Afvoer Maatschappij (VAM), has been transformed over the years into an attractive destination for sports and nature lovers.
At approximately 48 metres above sea level, the VAM mountain offers a challenging trail for cyclists and hikers. It is particularly popular among racing cyclists, due to the steep slopes that are rare in the relatively flat Dutch landscape. The top of the mountain offers an impressive view of the Drenthe landscape, making it an attractive spot for both recreational and nature lovers.
In addition to its recreational function, the VAM mountain is also a symbol of successful landscape restoration and sustainable management. The area around the mountain has been ecologically developed, with attention to local flora and fauna. The VAM mountain is therefore a unique example of how former industrial sites can be transformed into valuable recreational areas.
