Packing list: What do you take with you on a trail run?

Paklijst: Wat neem je mee tijdens een trailrun?

Trail running is a wonderful way to enjoy nature, improve your fitness and break the daily grind. Whether you're a seasoned trail runner or just starting out, it's essential to be well prepared. In this article we discuss what you need to bring for a successful and safe trail run and what should definitely be on your packing list..

1. Trail running shoes

Choosing the right trail running shoes is crucial. They provide grip on rough terrain and protect your feet against sharp stones and branches. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and suitable for the type of terrain you will be walking on.

2. Suitable Clothing

Choose breathable and moisture-regulating clothing, such as technical shirts and shorts. Depending on the weather and the length of your run, you may need to bring extra layers, such as a light windbreaker or raincoat.

3. Hydration

Maintaining the correct fluid balance is crucial during a trail run. Bring a water bottle, soft flask or hydration backpack, depending on your preference. Make sure you bring plenty of water, especially on hot days or long runs. Also look at the distance when choosing your drinking system. For a short run, a running belt may be sufficient. If you go further, a running backpack might be better.

4. Nutrition

Trail runs can be demanding, so make sure you get enough energy. Bring snacks such as energy gel, bars or dried fruit to keep your energy levels up. Experiment in advance to discover which diet works best for you. Don't just think about sweets, for example, a handful of salty cashew nuts is also delicious on the go.

5. GPS watch or other navigation aids

Trail runs can take you to remote areas, so it's important to know where you are and where you're going. Carry a map, compass or GPS device and learn how to use them. Modern smartphone apps can also be useful for navigation.

6. First aid kit or thermal blanket

It is always wise to carry a small first aid kit with basic supplies such as plasters, antiseptic wipes and painkillers. In the event of an injury or accident, you can quickly help yourself or others.

7. Personal Identification and Mobile Phone

Carry identification with your name, address and emergency contact details. Also take your cell phone with you in case of emergencies. Make sure it is charged and that you know how to call for help if needed.

8. Sunscreen and Insect Spray

Depending on your location and the season, protection from the sun and insects is important. Sunscreen and insect repellent can prevent discomfort and protect your skin.

9. Flashlight or Headlamp

If you plan to run in the early morning or late evening, make sure you have good lighting to navigate safely. I have once run with a running flashlight, but I still prefer a headlamp. You can also opt for a breast lamp.

Bringing the right gear for a trail run can make the difference between an enjoyable experience and a challenging situation. Be prepared and make sure you can enjoy your adventure in nature safely and comfortably. Remember to check the weather forecast before you go and always let someone know where you are going. Have fun on the trails!
